Review by David Kearney
As well as possessing arguably the greatest name ever to grace the rag-tag world of NZ music, Wild Bill Ricketts also knows a thing or two about penning a tune. For ‘West Wind’ the prolific Phoenix Foundation percussionist assembled a formidable array of musicians, including members of Fat Freddy’s Drop, The Black Seeds and Fly My Pretties, to breathe life into 10 of his expansive grooves. Boasting one of the most eclectic musical styles to come out of NZ in a long while, his sprawling blend of tribal rhythms, ambient FX and ambitious orchestral arrangements creates a rich, lush soundscape replete with reverb-drenched guitar licks, haunting saxophone swells (courtesy of Wellington sax legend Lucien Johnson) and writhing arpeggiated synths. It is the live instrument element however which sets this album apart. As well as Johnson, a legion of brass and strings add warmth, depth and humanity to the mix, while the fantastic live percussion and drums sound like they were cut straight from a Miles Davis record. The 11 minute The Great Eastern is a standout, evocative of a balmy South Pacific day, the reverberating strains of a tropical paradise eventually succumbing to some unstoppable malevolent force. The skies ultimately darken and angels become demons over the course of this masterful epic. A fantastic album, don’t be surprised to find yourself floating in a swirling vortex of dreamy effervescent psychedelia - and loving it.
