Mixing traditional Mongolian folk songs with modern sounds, Hanggai is one of China’s most unique bands.

Hailing from Inner Mongolia and Beijing, the six member band began when Ilchi traveled to Inner Mongolia to learn hoomei, throat singing, a Mongolian vocal technique in which the singer simultaneously emits two pitches. The group’s name Hanggai is a Mongolian word referring to an idealized landscape that includes grasslands, mountains, rivers, trees and blue sky.
Hanggai combines Mongolian folk and punk rock. Before forming Hanggai, Ilchi was the front man for punk band T9 and appeared in a documentary about Beijing punk bands called Beijing Bubbles. The band members are Mongolian and Han Chinese.
Hanggai’s songs are sung in Mongolian and are adaptations of Mongolian folk songs. The band incorporates traditional Mongolian instruments with modern instruments like electric guitars, bass and banjos and street sounds like noisy Beijing traffic and background sounds from local bars.
Hanggai have performed with Norwegian group Poing and American folk artist Abigail Washburn. Hanggai has performed across China and Europe.
Hanggai have not only created a unique style of music, but the band digs into its Mongolian roots expressing some of the band members’ struggles to rediscover their cultural identities.
