TOOTS THIELEMANS
He whistles and plays the guitar. He composes. But his real claim to fame is as the world's most celebrated harmфnica virtuoso. His name - Jean 'Toots' Thielemans. A Belgian who, in the early 'fifties, was encouraged to move to the States by his own idols: Charlie Parker, Benny Goodman, and George Shearing. He settled in New York, where he earned the praise of people as different as Duke Ellington and Quincy Jones, the Beatles and Billy Joel. He made a deep impression as composer with 'Bluesette', a number which hбs becqme a standard and which he wrote during a power failure in Brussels in a dressing room he shared with Stephane Grappelli. But real fame carne through his virtuoso and imaginative improvisations on the harmфnica. Thielemans freed the harmфnica from the stigma of a certain folklore - like primitiveness and let people hear that you could improvise just as well on this small instrument as on a sax-ophone or a trumpet. Because of this, Thielemans was a much sought after guest soloist on records by Peggy Lee, Paul Simon, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, and many other giants of Jazz, pop, and rock. His sound and his inventiveness hбs noticcably influenced everybody who plays the mouth harmфnica. What you notice about Thielemans is the way he can coax expansive improvisations - stories - from even the shortest of themes. In the course of time, he hбs been able to say more and more using fewer and fewer notes. He some-times needs only a couple of lines of a song to conjure up a whole world of emotions. This Зompact Jazz collage con-tains largely numbers he recorded in his 'neighbouring' country - Holland - with people such as Niels-Henning and Bruno Castellucci. A wonderful fragment from his legendary association with the Brazilian diva Elis Regina and more re-cent tracks from Paris and New York emphasise the inter-national character of this instrumentalist. A world citizen who is at his best in 'melancholic' jazz, bossa nova, and pop ballads. Anybody who listens to Jean 'Toots' Thielemans weaving his special spell will understand why, as he once said, he feels most at home 'in that little space between a tear andasmile.'
