Biography:
Trumpeter; born June 10, 1964, in Wrocław.
Wojtasik graduated from The Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music, where he studied jazz and entertainment music. He lectures at the Szymanowski Academy and teaches at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław.
Wojtasik played with the band New Presentation, and in 1988 the band performed at the Jazz Jamboree Festival. At the same time, he was also collaborating with the group Young Power, which revolutionized the Polish jazz scene. In the early 90's he joined Quintessence and the Krzysztof Popek Quartet, who produced an album, Lonely Town, that was voted the Best Album of 1995 in the 'Jazz Forum Magazine' readers' poll and was nominated to the Fryderyk Prize (known as the 'Polish Grammy'). In 1996 he recorded the album Quest with an international line-up that included Billy Harper, Ben Riley, Buster Williams and Leszek Możdżer.
The album Hope - on which Wojtasik plays with David Liebman, Ronnie Burrage, Clarence Seay and Leszek Możdżer - won the 2003 Fryderyk for Best Polish Jazz Album, while Wojtasik himself was awarded the prize for Best Polish Jazz Musician. In 2005 he recorded Colors with Francois Theberge, Nicolas Simion, Michael Donato and John Betsch. The following year The Piotr Wojtasik Sextet recorded We Want to Give Thanks, featuring Wojtasik's own compositions played with an impressive line-up of international musicians. In 2008 he won a Fryderyk for Jazz Musician of the Year, as well as winning Best Jazz Record for the album Circle.
