For anyone, who want to hear BBC Matrix H in action, this is a decoded and un-enhanced version of 'Instructions for Angels'. In the aftermath of the quad era BBC developed yet another matrix surround system. But unlike SQ and QS, which focussed on the optimum use of the limited channels separation, BBC also looked into the cues that phase shifts might give to localize soundsources correctly. The result was a system that had even less channel separation than QS and SQ, but surprisingly offered a more stable sound image. You can test it for yourself. When playing this disc, it is a requirement that you sit in the quad sweet spot, the intersection of the diagonals at even distances from the loudspeakers. Don't forget to reset the distances to the loudspeakers in your surround system. When listening to this disc in this way, the sound image appears stable. Even turning your head does not really influence the positions the sounds are emanating from. Compare that to SQ or QS: listening to a basic un-enhanced decode of QS or SQ, results in jumping of sound sources to various directions when turning the head. It is to bad BBC Matrix H didn't make it.
I will share a version with enhanced channel separation in the coming weeks also, so you don't need re-adjust your chair and surround system everytime when listening to this disc.
