Georg Katzer

Georg Katzer was born in 1935 in Habelschwerdt/Silesia and studied Composition (with Rudolf Wagner-Régeny and Ruth Zechlin) and Piano in Berlin (East) as well as at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He then became a master pupil of Hanns Eisler at the Academy of the Arts of the GDR, becoming a member of the institute in 1978. Since 1963 Katzer has worked as a freelance composer in and around Berlin.
He is a member of the Academy of Arts Berlin-Brandenburg and the Free Academy Leipzig as well as the Academy of Electroacoustic Music in Bourges. Along with his compositional work (chamber music, orchestral works, solo concertos, three operas and two ballets), Georg Katzer has also concerned himself with multimedia projects and improvisation. He has received composition prizes from the former GDR, Switzerland, France, the USA and Germany. In 1986 he founded the Academy Studio for Electoacoustic Music.

Born in 1935 in Halberstedt / Silesia Georg Katzer is one of the most important composers of our time. Katz studied with Rudolf Wagner-Regency, Ruth Zechlin and was a master student of Hanns Eisler, and Leo Spies at the Berlin Academy of Arts. To date, Georg Katzer created a diverse oeuvre with more than 150 compositions. These include ballets, electronic music, chamber music, orchestral works and musical theater. In the catalog, there are also string quartets.
The NEOS is now a recording with the String Quartet Nos. 1, 3 and 4 released (hybrid SACD, playable on regular CD players), founded in 2006 interpreted by the sonar Quartet. The second string is missing, it was so far not been identified or otherwise released, was at times even missing. Maybe one day it will be submitted even though elements of the second string quartet are now incorporated into the fourth.

The presently recorded three quartets were in a period of nearly forty years, the first in 1965, the third followed in 1987 and the fourth was already this century.
