О коллективе и альбоме
The backing group of songwriter Claudio Baglioni received the opportunity to record an instrumental album. (The band was formed in Rome in 1970 with a five-piece line-up featuring, along with Calabrò, Centofanti and Sangiorgio, bass player Walter Bernardi and percussionist Carlo Visca). The let's say more easy listening label didn't expect the group to record a progressive item and the project was cancelled. Only almost 20 years later an Italian label in cooperation with a Japanese distributor issued the album for the first time on cd in a very limited edition. The album was quickly sold out and as CD it became a collector's item. Happily Akarma Records reissued the album with another cover, first on CD then on LP. The recording was remastered and two more tracks added. I think the quality of the mixing is much better, and the two shorter bonus tracks makes the album more complete and into a better musical conceptual whole. The band split after the recording, probably disillusioned by the lack of chances connected to their album release. Almost all the musicians kept playing: guitarist Benson released some solo albums and is still active and popular in the Rome area, keyboardist Centofanti followed his career with singer-songwriter Claudio Baglioni and in Libra, while three of the others, Calabrò, Sangiorgio and Damiani, formed with two other musicians a jazz-rock group called Bauhaus. This group, that received the Best Italian Band prize at the Rome Villa Pamphili festival in 1974, was strongly influenced by Miles Davis' jazz-rock fusion experiments, and only produced a 7-track recording that has been recently issued by Akarma on CD for the very first time. With a very good quality the instrumental-only group has much in common with Perigeo and similar Italian bands, but very little traces left of their progressive rock past.

Their single album from 1971 contains three long tracks. The 14-minute first track is a cover of a part of Grieg's Peer Gynt, sounding like the German rock/jazz fusion bands (Virus, Murphy Blend, Ikarus, etc.) with a lot of guitar/organ/flute jamming. The 7-minute second track is in a more typically Italian acoustic folk style, including some nice flute playing. The last track (at 16 minutes) is a synthesis of their quiet folky and heavy rock/fusion elements, but sounds definitely like 70s Italian progressive. It starts out quietly in a folky style similar to the second track, but after a few minutes the first grandiose symphonic outburst occurs with flute/guitar/Hammond/saxophone interplay. A longer jamming part with the four above-mentioned instruments follows. The constant change between quiet folky and heavy symphonic continues, but in a varied and interesting way. It is the best track on the album. Overall Buon Vecchio Charlie sounds similar to PFM in the folkier parts and more like Il Giro Strano in the heavier parts, but less aggressive and more refined than the latter band. The album is mostly instrumental, but the vocals are pleasant. One of the better, very early (pre-Banco/PFM debut albums) Italian prog albums.

Buon Vecchio Charlie is one of those groups who first recently was discovered, and this is a very nice discovery indeed, cos this album holds very highly qualified progresive rock. The opeing track has a lot of flute, its based on the norwegian composer Edward Griegs In the hall of the mountain king. Contains a lot of good themes, played with a strong 70's rock feeling, largely due to good electric guitar leads. After some minutes vocals enter. A singer with plesant vocals indeed. Lenghty solos, including a keyboardsolo. The third track has an acoustic intro, gutar and flute. A track that shifts between soft and very aggressive themes and tempos. Solos from guitar, organ and sax... A long track divided into 5 pieces. One moment it will remind you of Jethro Tull, the next of Osanna or PFM. It really has a winning charachter, this progrock is complex and dazzling, yet has a free tone and spirit in the sound. Contains everything, will please most people! The bonustracks included, on this AKARMA-release, are of slightly weaker material. Especially the last track (5) which is mediocre and forgettable. But this album is indeed worth checking out because the original album with its long and sophisticated tracks has enough of very high class progrock for everybody into that. Certainly worth checking out!
