Об исполнителе (группе)
One of the more overlooked super groups in the history of rock, CAPTAIN BEYOND was formed by ex-DEEP PURPLE singer Rod Evans, ex-IRON BUTTERFLY guitarists Larry Reinhart and Lee Dorman, and ex Johnny Winter drummer Bobby Caldwell in 1972. The band only put out three albums, and never achieved more than a cult following, but they also managed to put out three strong albums of psychedelic guitar rock, reminiscent of a heavier PINK FLOYD at times. After their 1972 self-titled debut album, Caldwell quit and was replaced by Marty Rodriguez. With Rodriguez, the band produced a 1973 sophomore effort titled “Sufficiently Breathless”, after which Evans departed and the band went on hiatus. It wasn’t until 1976 that they returned, at which point Caldwell rejoined and Willy Daffern (who had previously played drums for a few bands) replaced Evans on vocals. Their third album, 1977′s “Dawn Explosion” went largely unnoticed however, and the band folded shortly afterwards.
The group’s best album has to be their first, which also featured an amazing album cover. Their sophomore effort “Sufficiently Breathless” has longer tracks, and is probably more progressive, but it falls short of the sheer firepower of the debut. As for “Dawn Explosion”, well let’s just say it went unnoticed for a reason.
CAPTAIN BEYOND will likely appeal to fans of HAWKWIND, as they play a similar brand of psychedelic hard rock (albiet a bit heavier). Anyone who enjoyed Rod Evans’ work with DEEP PURPLE would also do well to check out the band’s first two albums. That said, they never made anything truly essential in one’s prog collection, and because of this, people not into their style of music should stay away from them altogether.
Об альбоме (сборнике)
Captain Beyond’s self-titled album was released in June 1972, with all 13 of the album’s tracks credited to Evans and Caldwell. The album’s 3-D cover was as intriguing as group’s music, a cross between heavy metal and prog that yielded the powerhouse FM radio track, “Dancing Madly Backwards.”
Ironically, Evans had been dismissed from Deep Purple because the other members were convinced he couldn’t sing heavy metal material. Captain Beyond’s first album had a harder edge than anything Purple had done.
Capricorn was known for its emphasis on Southern rock, so Captain Beyond’s hard rock approach wasn’t properly promoted. Although the group was well received at the Montreux Festival in April 1972, they played only a handful of promotional gigs.
After the release of the first album, Caldwell left to join Rick Derringer’s band. – Michael Jefferson
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Captain Beyond is a one-of-a-kind progressive album with rock, heavy metal, and jazz influences with a space rock lyrical bend. Formed by former members of Deep Purple (Rod Evans, vocals), Iron Butterfly (Rhino, lead guitar, and Lee Dorman, bass), and Johnny Winter (Bobby Caldwell, drums) Captain Beyond is an album that flows from riff to riff, drumbeat to drumbeat, often with various time signatures within the same song. Taking a tip from the Moody Blues, songs flow directly into each other without benefit of any lag time between selections. Taken as a whole, the album is kind of a rush, as quick, riff-laden guitar lines predominate for a few songs before slowing down temporarily into a lull until the next takeoff. Lyrically, the album differentiates itself by exploring themes of the outer world and meanings of existence, often with references to the moon, sea, sun, and so on. Listeners may get the feeling of taking a journey to space in a rocket ship headed for destination unknown. Musically, the album is superior in all aspects. Rod Evans has a strong rock voice, Rhino plays an enormous amount of hook-laden guitar lines, and Lee Dorman plays complex basslines (for example, at the end of As the Moon Speaks-Return) that lead to typically rhythmic, nimble Bobby Caldwell drumming. The tightness between musicians is enormous, never lets up for long, and leaves the listener feeling like the ride should continue for the indefinite future. - Michael Ofjord
