Cartel's new album called Cycles is about exactly what it sounds like--the classic steps of a dying connection or relationship.
Cycles begins with the familiar, fist-pumping opener of alternative pop punk albums about taking the world on, being real, and standing apart from they that lie. After the classic metaphors (game, race, veins) of trying to get back the girl they lost by look[ing] up (losing focus while chasing after her), the songs of anger and accusation, and finally of berating the girl as a bad friend, the album closes with a defeated notion and (admirably) an admittance of the cycles the speaker is in and will by trying to find the center of.
S Original, but Successful
There's something oddly warm about albums like these. While there is the accepted truth that there is nothing new under the sun, and that art's greatness comes more from how the story is told than what the actual story is, there are still degrees of originality within the telling. Cycles offers little, lyrically, that pop-punk fans haven't heard before, but the music is original enough that it succeeds as an album.
The music is smooth, full, harmonized, emotional, and driven. Like their previous albums, it has the energy of Fallout Boy and musical balance of Amberlin. As the content itself is a highly emotional subject, fans can get a cathartic rush from singing something as simple as it's only you I see while the angelic guitar strums away their sorrow and the vocals blend in a sweetly harmonized stream.
Cycles tells a story everyone knows-a story everyone can tell themselves. A love is unrequited because someone wants to take a faster ride, and after being able to only think about the person (Only You, It Still Remains), the speaker tries to break from the hurt, but finds himself/herself overwhelmed by the emotions and thrown into cycles. The album ends on more of a negative than a positive note, reinforcing the concept of emotional cycles.
