Ahhh Rotting In Hell, a forgotten gem, and oh so very nasty and rotten.
Reminiscent of one of my favorite death metal albums, Screams of Anguish, (although much shorter in length and perhaps not as technical), Deteriorate bring forth a brutal slab of putrid, filthy death metal.
Heavy as fuck and just as fast in parts, Rotting In Hell has quickly become another of my favorites with one of the best vocal performances. Disgusting screeches and sickly growls greet you here during the half hour of blasting brutality. Guitars tones are often low and chainsaw like for the most part, with slow, crushing riffs, however also will speed up in an attempt to snap your head of your body. The chainsaw guitars remind me much of most Swedish death as you will probably also find, sounding is if they are ready to slice and tear through flesh and bone just to get the point across on how serious this death metal is. Tempo changes are frequent, going from slow chugging riffs to neck fuckin snappers and back to the chugging, and let me not forgot the sections of down right groovy-ness.
Every member on this album turned out a warm, steaming, death-feast of a performance, however I must choose the vocals as my favorite aspect. They are sick and fucking twisted throughout and provide a varied performance compared to what you will find with most death metal. This man sounds pissed, and disgusted, and ready to eat you. The drums also add to the mix in a superb manner, jackhammering along, wanting to destror and turn to pulp anything left behing by the rusty, dull chainsaw. They are crushing and brutal during the slower breaks and grovier sections, and crazed and frenzied during the faster part, while not losing any consistency or sounding as if the man on battery is out of control, as he seems to always be in control of holding the pace of these songs, with the rest of the band following suit… and I don’t believe any triggers are used (thank Satan).
If you are a fan of the older school of death metal, and especially underappreciated lost or hidden gems, get this album. It is a shame Deteriorate turned to more of a black metal band with their last album, as I would have loved to hear what these gents could have churned out on an album closer to the 40 minute mark rather than 30 minutes, although 30 minutes was all this beast of album needed to get its point across.
I hope this album is not soon forgotten, but unfortunately, mahap it already is.
