Amongst the current flurry of broadsheet endorsed female singer songwriters, there exists a creative void that confuses clever marketing and Top Shop playlists with the kind of naturally evolved talent that packs real emotional brunt. It is therefore always a proper treat to get our hands on a new Diane Cluck record, displaying as she does the kind of inherent aural dexterity that leaves the likes of Sandi Thom and Lily Allen languishing down their myspace ghettos. With all the material on 'Monarcana' recorded at Cluck's home between 2001 and 2004, the bulk of the new album consists of fantastically spontaneous songs that give a genuine glimpse into what makes her talent such a treasure. Suffused in tape hiss, digital mishaps and thrumming backdrops, the music on 'Monarcana' would undoubtedly shimmy into the lo-fi firmarment with little friction, but as Cluck herself states sometimes it's really just that when the baby's coming you don't always have time to sterilize the rags. As such the likes of 'Snake', 'Beatless Wonder' and 'Diamonds' represent a level of intimate spontaneity that is oft lacking within modern music - allowing the creases that give something its soul the space to breathe and fully evolve. Liberally drenched in melody throughout, the bare-boned production of 'Monarcana' allows Cluck's astonishing voice to shine at maximum lambency; with the melancholic melodies of 'Gardenovena', lurching percussion of 'Dilapidelliance' and shimmering finesse of 'Parlor Trick' all near perfect distillations of how engrossing music can be. Ensuring that not a second of the record falls by the wayside, 'Mornarcana' offers up twenty-three separate songs that somehow manage to coax the full spectrum of emotions from the slightest of ingredients, as Cluck marinates her beautifully pregnant vocals amongst a smattering of fragile instrumentation and hazy production; the net result being the kind of record that will become part of your most cherished collection in no time at all.
