Крайне необычный и сложный релиз от испанской команды, играющей где-то на стыке doom и black, который начинает нравиться уже с первых минут прослушивания. Стиль с трудом поддается описанию: очень медленные, почти funeral doom'овые риффы, сопровождающиеся характерным низким гроулом, могут через мгновение смениться скоростными гитарными пассажами, по сложности не уступающими никакому progressiv'y или math'y (собственно, слова math black metal буквально первыми и пришли на ум, когда я попытался охарактеризовать стиль альбома), а на смену гроулингу придет бешеный блэковый скрим или сильный, красивый чистый мужской вокал. Альбому удается постоянно держать слушателя в напряжении, от него исходит энергетика безумства, обреченности, усиливающаяся за счет почти постоянной смены скоростей, смены настроения внутри песен и альбома; даже в моменты мнимого спокойствия, когда слух не раздирается бешено-красивым и сложным рёвом гитар, успокоиться трудно, и только и ждешь, когда шквал звуков вернется. Мне для более полного восприятия альбома не хватило прочтения лирики, которую я не смог найти в И-нете. Хотя уже по названиям песен и альбома ясно, что текстовая составляющая Verses In Vain является одним целым с музыкальной, дополняя ее.
Недостатков в альбоме почти нет. А тот единственный, что я нашел, прямо вытекает из всех его достоинств - альбом сложен для восприятия, слушать его много и часто не представляется возможным, уж слишком сильно он давит на сознание, да так, что я, принимаясь слушать его в n-ый раз, редко дослушиваю до конца (творение длится чуть менее полутора часов). Но, несмотря на это, альбом получился наипревосходнейшим. Буду надеяться, что Kathaarsys и дальше продолжат радовать нас своими релизами.

Kathaarsys started its career in 2002 beginning from the ashes of the Gothic-Doom band Elsenor, with the idea of starting an original and high-quality music project. The leadership was taken by J.L. Montans and the election of the other members was subjected to the inalienable purpose of reaching a professional sound and a great execution quality. Portrait of Wind and Sorrow is our first and, at present, only full-length record. This professional album embodies the inner spirit that has accompanied the band from its birth. And within it, many years of hard work and dedication can be appreciated. The album was recorded between September/October 2004 in the Lithium Studios of Pontevedra and mastered in Cantabria.
Kathaarsys would rather avoid categorizing its music as black metal. No political ideology is supported in our lyrics, it is the ancestral Galician countryside who inspires them.
