REVIEW FROM FORGOTTEN-SCROLL:
When american power metallers Last Empire, came out of nowhere and released their private (distributed in Europe by Underground Symphony) debut a couple of years back, they created quite a stir for a multitude of reasons. First of all they were heavy as fuck! Secondly, they played a brand of technical in your face epic power metal almost extinct nowadays. Forget catchy choruses and repetitive song structure. Tons of riffs will give way to yet more tons of riffs, while the pace may vary from speed to doom, all in the same song, without sacrificing even the least bit in continuity. The vocals mostly duel on the higher regions, while also having notable mid range power, and even growling parts. The rhythm parts are as solid as a brick wall, and the lyrics deal mostly with mythological fantasy, but not in the gay way european bands approach the subject! The dragon being gutted on the cover pretty much says it all!
Overall, Last Empire's sound brought Skullview's Legends of valor to mind (although my friend and co-editor Trampakoulas tends to disagree), with all it's heavy, technical and everchanging approach, as well as the deranged vocals. Friends of complex epic metal will find their new messiah. The rest try before you buy, albums such as this are not easily digested by everyone!The band is currently working on their second release with partly changed lineup, so keep an eye out. REVIEW FROM METAL-OBSERVER:
Besides TЭR the biggest surprise of 2003 had been the indie release of American newcomers LAST EMPIRE, their self titled debut album. Judging by the cover artwork one could prematurely stuff the band into the Truelala Metal corner, but wrong thinking. The band plays progressive US Power Metal as we got it in this quality only in the 80s. Best Prog Metal from the 80s? Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you’ve read correctly. Even though I don’t really like FATES WARNING and HELSTAR too much, LAST EMPIRE remind me exactly of them. And I love it.
Dig through your record collection and unearth forgotten jewels such as LIEGE LORD’s “Freedom’s Rise“, SAVATAGE’s “Power Of The Night“, GRIFFIN’s “Flight Of The Griffin“, DEADLY BLESSING’s “Ascend From The Cauldron“ or DAMIEN THORNE’s “The Sign Of The Jackal“, listen to them and then order “Last Empire”, you won’t regret it!
To describe the songs even remotely is impossible to me as they are too layered, too big and complex, for sure it is incredible to see, how this band plays itself into a true frenzy, but never forgets what makes the song, the melody itself. Even though the hymns might seem recalcitrant and at times even bristly, they all ignite like a bomb after a while. The catchiest one most probably is “Wings Of Dragons”.
I can hardly put it into words how this album has impressed me, the logical consequence is the perfect rating.
