Little Feat - High Wire Act Live In St. Louis 2003 [DVD] (DVD)
I bought this DVD from Amazon in September '04, and have been playing it regularly. It's a very generous offering, with two and a quarter hours of concert footage from their August '03 performance in St. Louis, together with a very well presented 15 minute documentary on Little Feat's evolution and current projects.
Also included is the sleeve art from the band's 20+ albums, a selection of stills from the concert (the background music which accompanies these is relatively louder than the other music on the disc, and you'll be reaching for the volume control), and some web URLs for those playing the disc on a web enabled PC.
Visually, this performance gleams. There are at least six camera positions capturing the performance in amazing clarity. Roving cameras in the audience are well utilised, showing the audience participation, but in just the right proportion to the far more numerous stage shots. It's very well directed, and quite a spectacle to watch.
The sound is superb. It's in 5.1 as expected, but it is the balance which really strikes me. The seven piece band is perfectly mixed. It's a better mix than many studio recordings in my opinion, with exactly the right level of emphasis placed on instruments during solo etc, and I only wish some of my audio CDs featured Gradney's twang with body bass tone achieved on this recording.
Performance wise? Well it's Little Feat, so they have 36 years of experience and top notch material to draw from. There are some nice improvised yet tight passages on the extended versions of their classics, and none of the drum, bass, keyboard solos etc fall into the too long and self indulgent trap which you'll find on other live DVDs. Special mention must go to drummer Richie Hayward, who turns in an energetic virtuoso performance for the entire 140 minutes.
To top the package off, it is well presented, with an attractive menu scheme and some nice transition effects.
Personally it feels the main objective of this St. Louis performance was to produce this brilliant DVD, rather than it just being a spin-off from an ordinary concert. The excellent venue and production team can not have been a coincidence, and I recommend this to anyone who has an interest in Little Feat's music.
