Marvin Powell has quickly become one of the finest songwriters and song-crafters on Merseyside. Songwriting prowess that’s been consistently showcased in the quality of his releases to date - both in single and EP form - and that’s certainly there front and centre for all to hear on his phenomenal album Dust Of The Day.
From the minute Buried starts up you know you’re in for not only an enjoyable listening journey but also an education - after all some of Powell’s unique song titles require a dictionary. Joking aside there’s real depth here, every song is an intimate experience, you’re on a journey with a poetic wordsmith and his acoustic guitar.
As well as the opener, long-time followers of Powell and his live performances will also recognise and almost certainly adore the simply stunning Salt. Amongst the subtle delicacy, the pace picks up as mid-album joy is found in Samsara - a real foot tapper, that offers a lovely contrast.
Another that stands out is Move Through Me - an absolute certainty to be stuck in your head after a mere handful of plays. Powell’s voice really is a joy to listen and escape to - both soothing and serene.
As an album this is not only the work of a songwriter at the peak of his powers but a delicate escape down the calmest of waters. A record that’s stunning piece by piece and simply phenomenal as a whole.
