Notes: Travelling a total of more than 900 km for a concert in a very stressful time is something I don't do often, but I had a good and simple reason: No-Man, one of Steven Wilson's (side) projects, finally payed Germany a visit along with only two other dates in London and Zoetermeer after a 15 years lasting tour hiatus! The Savoy Theater in Dьsseldorf is an old movie theatre and turned out to be the perfect venue for the No-Man gig — very intimate atmosphere and seated (I only missed the popcorn!)! After 25 minutes of experimental drone music by Fear Falls Burning, No-Man started on time and played a solid 100 minutes set with a quite varied song selection. I had a good time, though I would have preferred to hear some more personal favourites, especially from the last two albums. Besides, I was a bit disappointed with the performance of 'Truenorth', which didn't nearly have the beauty and atmosphere of the studio version. It's a pity that the third and — in my opinion — most beautiful part of this song has not been performed, but you can't have everything, can you? However, apart from that no (more) serious complaints from my side, and 'we' even got an extra song ('Housekeeping') compared to the other two nights! Now some words about the acoustics at the Savoy. The sound was simply amazing (kudos to Ian Bond!) with great stereo effects! Every single instrument could be heard clearly in the mix and I probably had the perfect taping spot: 7th row, centered, gallery, nobody in front of me and two other tapers (one of them being the legendary kabi225) next to me. Steven Wilson treated the audience with some evil guitar riffs and really enjoyed himself, Tim Bowness captivated the approximately 300 people in attendance with his special voice and was surprisingly talkative (SW didn't say a word!). The fans showed their enthusiasm by rewarding the band with standing ovations before the two encore songs and at the end. After the show Tim and the other band members showed up at the lounge (except for SW) and gave autographs. It was also nice to meet some fans from all over Germany (familiar and new faces)!
Recording notes: I haven't listened to all known sources yet (09/2008), but the quality of this recording is great overall for audience and actually reflects the sound and atmosphere at the venue. It can easily be ranked amongst my best recordings, but you should judge yourself. The only downside is a couple of loud claps, and it couldn't be avoided that some tracks start with applause from the previous song or an announcement. Otherwise the audience behaved very well throughout and you could hear a pin drop during the quieter passages, so enjoy!
