BROKEN DOOR
From Bottrop (north of Essen), and formed in 1973 as Prosper I, with the line-up of: Jürgen
Pluta (keyboards, bass), Wolfgang Teske (drums), Uli Ingebold (saxophone, flute), Evert
Brettschneider (guitar), with Matthias Geisen (bass) who had a long history with various
1960's blues and early-1970's prog bands. The original band split when Jürgen joined
Wallenstein, Wolfgang joined Aera for their debut, and Evert went to the experimental
jazz-fusion outfit Contact Trio.
In 1975, Matthias reformed the band as just Prosper, inviting two ex-members of Tobogan, with
the line-up gelling as that on the LP, and Evert being a member of two bands at the same
time. Their mixture of jazzy, blues and prog styles was pretty wide-ranging, with some
notable multi-guitar textures that recall Agitation Free a little in parts, but mostly the
fusion edge and fiery dynamics in the instrumentals give it a Mahavishnu Orchestra cum
Canterbury edge (occasionally towards Brainstorm). The album is quite flawed, however, with
the second track being almost a cappella ballad, and 'Your Country' almost living up to the
title at best feels a bit like Wishbone Ash. As a self produced album that would be too
broad-ranging for most tastes it's not surprising it was such an obscurity.
After various changes in the line-up, the band tried to reinvent itself in 1977, but
eventually folded in 1980. For such an unknown band Prosper can be seen as an important focal
point, a seminal hub in the history of many bands, with other connections including Straight
Shooter and Chicken Bones.
