This live concert recorded at Bimbo's in San Francisco is a musical survey of the popular music of the last 1000 years.

01. Sumer is Icumen In (trad., arr. by Thompson; Beeswing Music admin. by Bug/BMI)
The oldest known round in the English language - it can be sung in six dovetailing parts. Written down by John Farnsette, a monk at Reading Abbey, in the mid-13th century. His manuscript still viewable in the British Museum.
02. King Henry V's Conquest Of France (trad., arr. by Thompson; Beeswing music admin. by Bug/BMI)
Based on the true story of the King of France's nicely insulting gift of a barrel of tennis balls to King Henry V of England - the ballad changes it to a more calculating three tennis balls. Amazingly collected in the 1928 in Cade's Cove, Tennessee, long after it had disappeared from England. This version slightly rendered into more modern English, and the odd missing line added.
03. So Ben Mi Ca Bon Tempo (Vecchi, arr. by Thompson; Beeswing Music admin. by Bug/BMI)
Composed by Orazio Vecchi (1550-1605), a cathedral musician from Modena. This obviously written in secular spare time:
I know a lucky fellow. But I can't say who it is
He seems to be quite a favourite. But my lips are sealed
O! If I could only tell you. Who comes, who goes, who stays.
But if I did, You would probably despair.
There is a dance that goes with it?
04. Bonnie St. Johnstone (circa 17th century)
The tune is from Songs of the North, Volume 2, a Victorian collection. The words are collated from many versions. From the 'Cruel Mother' family of ballads.
05. O Sleep, Fond Fancy (1590, Written by Thomas Morley (1557 or 8 - 1602))
A three-part madrigal, being a part song for several voices, unaccompanied. This type of madrigal Morley described as a Canzonet - a little short song wherein little art can be shewed; being made in strains...and every strain repeated except in the middle. Morley was also the composer of teh favourite setting of It Was a Lover And His Lass in Shakespeare's As You Like It.
06. Remember, O thou man,
From the Melismata (1611) - this carol reprinted from Chappell's Popular Music of Olden Time. It may have been merely collected, or updated, by Ravenscroft.
07. Shenandoah (trad., arr. by Thompson; Beeswing Music admin. by Bug/BMI)
A work song on the old square-rigged sailing ships, for turning the capstan. The Shenandoah mentioned is more likely the one in Iowa, hence the 'Wide Missouri'.
08. Blackleg Miner (trad., arr. by Thompson; Beeswing Music admin. by Bug/BMI)
Popular with folk revivalists, a song from the Durham coalfields, of indeterminate age - Deleva and Segal Mines both saw industrial action on many occasions. Blackleg being British for Scab.
09. Trafalgar Square (trad., arr. by Thompson; Beeswing Music admin. by Bug/BMI)
One of those pretending to be a toff or 'toff fallen on hard times' songs, like Burlington Bertie or We're a Couple Of Swells. Subtitled The Optimistic Outcast', a parody of the false values of aristocratic society.
10. There Is Beauty? (Gilbert Sullivan/trad., arr. by Thompson; Beeswing Music, admin. by Bug/BMI)
From the Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan. According to Opera convention, it's not just the young folk who get married at the end - at least one set of wrinklies are required to get hitched as well.
11. Java Jive (1940, Written by Ben Oakland and Milton Drake)
Milton Drake wrote songs for many films, including My Little Chickadee, For Whom The Bell Tollsand The Big Store.He composed the lyrics for Mairzy Doats. Ben Oakland played piano at Carnegie Hall at the age of nine, and wrote, directed and produced shows for such artists as Jeanette MacDonald, Josephine Baker, and Nanette Fabray. The Ink Spots were previously known as The Riff Brothers and The Percolating Puppies.
12. Night and Day (1932, Written by Cole Porter)
From The Gay Divorcee. Originally sung in the stage production by Fred Astaire. This song was apparently inspired by Porter's feelings for choreographer Nelson Barclift.

Borrowed this from a Nat King Cole record - jazz gets a little zanier!
14. Drinking Wine Spo-dee-o-dee (Sticks McGhee-J. Mayo Williams; Universal MCA Music Publishing/ASCAP)
The Sticks McGhee classic via Jerry Lee Lewis.
15. A-11 (1963, Written by Hank Cochran)
Cochran was in a teenage duo, The Cochran Brothers with Edddie Cochran, even though they were unrelated! He wrote many country hits including I Fall to Pieces for Patsy Cline. A-11 was a hit for Buck Owens.
16. See My Friends (1965, Written by Ray Davies)
Inspired by a stopover in Bombay in 1965. Ray Davies was moved by the droning song of fisherman on the beach at dawn. dave Davies cites an influence by Davy Graham. Usually considered the first 'oriental' pop song.
17. Friday On My Mind (1966, Written by George Young and Harry Vanda)
The Easybeats were an Australian-based band compaosed of three Brits and two Dutch nationals, including ex-Mojo drummer Gordon Snowy Fleet. This is one of the classic Merseybeat era pop songs.
18. Tempted (Glenn Tilbrook-Chris Difford; EMI Blackwood Music Inc./BMI)
Great blue-eyed soul from Tilbrook and Difford, heirs to The Beatles' mantle of melodic pop.
19. Oops! I Did It Again (Karl Sandberg-Rami Yacoub; Zomba Enterprises Inc./ASCAP)
Where's the audience on the singalong? Taken out of context, this is a pretty nice song.
20. Cry Me A River (Arthur Hamilton; Chappell Co. Inc./ASCAP)

From that fine band, Bowling for Soup, self-styled drunk rockers and fat guys, from Wichita Falls, Texas.

This version based on that of W.G. Ross. Composer unknown. Performed in the disreputable Cyder Cellars in Maiden Lane, London. Probably derived from an earlier song about Captain Kidd:
