Об исполнителе (группе)
I've already read a lot about RITUAL STEEL and their almost mythical single Orchid Queen, without having heard a single note myself yet. At least in the underground the Teutonic Metalians have an almost godlike status. That RITUAL STEEL have turned towards the trend free, true Heavy Metal and have nothing to do with trend currents like Sympho Speed or even Nu-Metal, is pretty obvious.
Об альбоме (сборнике)
I personally rather think that the material on A Hell Of A Knight is a tribute to the glorious Eighties, where Metal still has been Metal and hairspray still hairspray... So no modern sounds and the production also is held deliberately tough. What will reign in success a lot is the voice of singer Sascha (Sir Lord Doom?), whose voice is, let's call it like that, original and you have to get used to it. He is not really a blessed vocal acrobat, but his cranky voice still fits like the fist in the face of the unbeliever! His high screams can really gnaw on some peoples' nerves. Apart from that I like his rough voice, because I like those cranky vocals… On Hell Brigade he still overdoes it a little, yet as a parody on Udo Dirkschneider it comes off very well.
On Armageddon Symphony the screaming fits again... the song is a great speeder, without nursery rhyme attitude - rough and metallic! You also have to attest the other songs burning passion, everything comes straight from the heart - you can hear that! Best example is Ritual Steel a cranky hammer that should cater to every fan of MANILLA ROAD or CIRITH UNGOL.
In a time where music has turned into an interchangeable fast food form, casted bands make tons of money and millions of people sit in front of the TV to watch Germany searches for the soup star, I'm glad for a band like RITUAL STEEL: They give a shit on bad reviews that will come (Hi Rock Hard) and will get cult status from the fans that know what's real Metal. Not everything has to sound perfect, smooth and happy. Shit on triggered drums, who cares for 5 octave voices, if you can convey the right atmosphere nicely rough as well? Call me a child of yesterday, but I prefer RITUAL STEEL over all the polished crap from Italy and Sweden (no exceptions) that molests our ears every month. (Online March 2, 2003)
