Review for Sadus's Live In Santiago (Chile). на английском
Welcome to the world of underground metal! Sadus is one of those pioneering thrash bands from the bay area that never received the recognition that they deserved. Much like Demolition Hammer from New York, or Sacrifice from Scarborough Ontario, Canada, these guys play brutal thrash with death styled vocals and aggression that has been lacking for quite some time now in the current underground scene.
This DVD which was filmed in Santiago Chile back in 2004 was part of a promotional campaign in preperation of the bands come-back CD, Out For Blood. Its obvious after watching this DVD that the band had been rehearsing for quite some time before actually going back on the road, since alot of the progressive elements that were common with the Sadus back catalogue were done to near perfection.
The one thing that I admire greatly about this DVD is the fact that the band reached all the way back to their first album for songs, and they manage to cover just about every era of the Sadus legacy. Even songs from the album Out For Blood were played, and as you may or may not know, this album had not been released yet. To be honest with you, I personnaly was a little hesitant when I first heard the newest Sadus CD, but after acquiring this DVD, I was rather surprised with how well the new stuff actually fit into the bands set alongside some of their classic masterpieces.
The performances on this DVD are pretty well top shelf, especially Steve Digiogio and his ability to play with his fingers as oppose to a pick. Steve is probably one of the last true great bass players in the genre of thrash metal, alongside people such as Greg Christian. John Allen's drumming is up to par, yet nothing as remotely intense as Gene Hoglan or Paul Bostaph.
Darren Travis on the other hand has some problems. Darren is a great rythm player, but his ability as a lead guitarist in a live setting just isn't shred worthy. In fact, alot of the solos are litteraly hacked to death and stumble out key on occassion. As for his vocals, well you either love this style of music or you don't. He souds strikingly similar to Rob Urbinati from Sacrifice from time to time, and other times similar to the dude from Demolition Hammer. I actually dig the vocals, I think it adds a dimension to the music in terms of its aggressiveness.
The quality of this DVD is nothing to write home about. The entire show is filmed with only one camera, much like the Exodus DVD, Live At the DNA. This lighting is a little bit dark, but this may be intentional, once again to match the atmosphere that is trying to be created by the band. Sound quality is decent, but again this is not in Dolby 5.1.
Overall, this DVD is worth acquiring simply due to the fact that Sadus have been defunct for almost a decade, but are back with a vengeance and this DVD is a clear indicator that this band still has what it takes to be considered a force to be reckoned with...now if only they'd find a lead guitar player!
