Свою карьеру начал именно как гитарист в 1980 году у Фрэнка Заппы. С 1983 года выступает как самостоятельный солирующий гитарист. Вдохновителями в творчестве для гитариста Стива Вая стали Джими Хендрикс и Джими Пейдж. Игре на гитаре Стиву Ваю посчастливилось обучаться у самого Джо Сартиани, ставшего впоследствие гитарной легендой.
