Review
Leon Rene was the principal figure in running the affiliated Class and Rendezvous labels, who recorded a good amount of early Los Angeles RB-influenced rock'n'roll in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It's a good bet that just two of the 24 songs on this compilation will be familiar to general rock fans: Bobby Day's classic Rockin' Robin and B. Bumble the Stingers' eccentric instrumental Nut Rocker, based on a part of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. Those are the first two tracks on this CD, and that leaves 22 more to go, most of them pretty obscure, though actually they had more chart success than you might suspect. Indeed about half the songs on the disc charted, so you might also remember Bobby Day's Over and Over, later a big hit for the Dave Clark Five; Day's original version of Little Bitty Pretty One, covered for a much bigger hit by Thurston Harris; Eugene Church's solid good-time RB-rock tune Pretty Girls Everywhere; and the Ernie Fields Orchestra's rocked-up In the Mood, an actual Top Ten hit in 1959, though seldom played on oldies radio. Frankly the goods get less interesting the lower in the charts you go, as demonstrated by Day's Rockin' Robin-soundalike The Bluebird, The Buzzard the Oriole; Church's Miami; Fields's Chattanooga Choo Choo; and the Dyna-Sores' Alley Oop, the distant third in a field of cover versions which saw the Hollywood Argyles get to #1 with the same tune, and Dante the Evergreens make the Top Twenty with yet another rendition. Johnny Guitar Watson (with his 1959 rock single The Bear/One More Kiss) and Jesse Belvin (with a 1960 single I'm Confessin') are the only relatively big names among the flop singles also included on the compilation. Overall it's okay early rock'n'roll just out of the RB bathtub, with nothing nearly as fine as the classic Rockin' Robin, though Pretty Girls Everywhere, Over and Over, and Little Bitty Pretty One are pretty good too. One of the tracks, Fields's Texas Twister, was previously unissued.
