I quite dig this and I especially dig the ironies and synergies, mid-years Great White bassist Tony Montana turning in a feisty, compact album that sounds like Great White without all the corners sawed off, taped up and marked with little warning pylons. The album's three years old now, but crunchy classic blues rock never goes out of style. Indeed, Tombstone Shuffle was only available as a Japanese issue before France's Axe Killer picked it up, and this issue drops one track but adds two, 'Dog' sounding like hair metal Zeppelin with a great guitar tone, and 'Netherworld' being a languid blues-buffed ballad with hints of Cheap Trick and Extreme. You can tell this is one of those twilight maturity hair lifecycle things, uncorrupted roots music, no preconceptions about the big signing, just solid barroom metal in love with a loud guitar, a point really driven home by the stomped and stomping version of Thin Lizzy's 'Cowboy Song', sorta GN'R meets Steve Earle, Montana's twangy, ironic Great White pipes propelling the track deep into the meaning centres of Montana's psychological profile. It all proves how right Montana was for that annoying band, and how now he is getting it right by getting that band out of his system.
