The Human Beast has continued to exert a fascination for collectors, not just for their eponymous album's rarity, but due to the group's connection with Bread Love & Dreams member David McNiven. His relationship with this trio predates that band, however, and musically the two groups have nothing in common, not surprising as McNiven's contribution was mainly lyrical, penning three of the songs on this set. And one can barely imagine the consternation of Bread fans who picked up the Human's album in hopes of hearing a similar folkie prog set. Instead they were subjected to the Beastly sound of razor-sharp psychedelia in an exceedingly dark mode. The group's antecedents are clear: if Jimi Hendrix had lived to join Black Sabbath and released a space rock album, it would probably sound a lot like this. Unfortunately, guitarist Gillies Buchan is not quite up to Hendrix's own standards, nor is the rhythm section equal to Sabbath's. Still, the group's driving sound, extravagant guitar passages, and angsty lyrics should have appealed to unhappy teenagers across the rock world. But in a time of virtuosity, the Beast just didn't have the chops to stand up to the big boys, and the group faded into obscurity. Today, however, the Humans may find new favor with space rockers, headbangers, and even goths with their gloomy aura, mind-bending styling, and guitar-driven sound.
