Review

EMI’s Original Hits: Rap Soul is a seven-disc, 116-track budget-line box set. The selections span several decades and there’s little rhyme or reason. It’s a grab bag in which several artists appear three times, as is the case with Brass Construction, Phil Fearon Galaxy, Soul II Soul, Freddie Jackson, and Loose Ends (though not with “Hangin’ on a String”). Gang Starr is present with five songs, while Wu-Tang Clan appears once. There’s no distinction made between radio edits, extended mixes, or album versions, which can be problematic for people expecting a specific form of an inclusion, but the set is, nonetheless, a cheap way to obtain a big chunk of popular RB and rap.
