Disc One -
* Flex with the Halter on the Ground
- A horse that is light on the ground will be light under saddle. Teaching your horse the concept on the ground first, makes teaching the same concept under saddle much easier.
* Flex with the Bridle on the Ground
- A horse can never be too soft or too supple. Teaching your horse to soften to the bridle on the ground will make it easier to teach him the same lesson under saddle.
* Touch and Rub Exercise
- It’s very important to be able to yield the horse’s hindquarters any time you want because when a horse rears, bolts or takes off, he’s using his hindquarters against you. But if you can get him to yield and disengage by crossing over with his hind feet, it’s like pushing the clutch in on a car, you can take away his power and regain control of the situation.
* One Rein Flexes
- Lateral flexion is the key to vertical flexion. The softer the horse is from side to side, the easier it is to get him to tuck his nose in and collect.
* Yield the Hindquarters at the Standstill
- All of your horse’s power comes from his hindquarters. By being able to disengage his hindquarters, you are essentially telling him that you can stop him any time you want and take his power away.
Disc Two -
* One Rein Stops
- By using just one rein to stop your horse, you can make him soften laterally and yield his hindquarters. Any time a horse disengages his hindquarters, his gas pedal and balance are immediately taken away from him. Without a gas pedal, he can’t go anywhere and without balance, he can’t rear or buck.
* Cruising Lesson at the Trot and Canter
- In this exercise you will establish the cruise control button on your horse. It’ll teach your horse to go the exact speed you want him to go.
* Follow the Fence at the Trot and Canter
- This exercise will help you start to teach steering to your horse by using a fence line for assistance. Your horse will learn to be responsible for his own actions.
Disc Three -
* Yield the Hindquarters on the Fence
- This exercise will further help you teach your horse how to yield his hindquarters and incorporate more suppleness into the maneuver.
* Bending at the Walk
- You want all five of your horse’s body parts to soften around to pressure from your hands and legs. In this exercise, you will ask the horse to bend and soften laterally around your inside leg.
* Stop at Whoa
- Whether you’re in an arena or on the trail, a good stop is important to your safety. Throughout the Downunder Horsemanship Method, you’ll learn a variety of ways to stop your horse, but in this exercise, you’ll teach him to stop off a spoken command.
* Four Leaf Clover at the Trot
- This exercise combines teaching your horse to do smooth rounded corners and straight lines. It’ll help develop the horse’s steering wheel so that you can guide him all over the arena.
* Post to Post
- This exercise will teach your horse to ride in a straight line without anticipating whether to go left or right. It’s also a great focus exercise for you because in order to get the horse to where you want, you have to look to where you want him to do.
Disc Four -
* Yield the Hindquarters and Sidepass
- This exercise sets the foundation for teaching your horse how to sidepass. By yielding the horse’s hindquarters first, you’ll encounter less resistance when you ask him to move laterally away from your leg.
* Vertical Flexion at the Standstill
- The first step in teaching your horse to collect is to teach him to give to the bit at the standstill. Once he softens to the bit at the standstill, then you can progress through the gaits.
* Vertical Flexion at the Walk
- After you’ve taught the horse to give to the bit and soften at the standstill, the next step is to teach him how to soften vertically at the walk.
* Yield the Hindquarters and Back Up
- This exercise is the foundation to teaching your horse how to back

In the second installment of the Riding With Confidence Series, Clinton continues to work with China, a 10-year-old Quarter Horse mare, and introduces you to more complex training theories and practices.

* Yield to a Stop at the Walk, Trot and Canter
- The hindquarters are where all of your horse’s power comes from - it’s like the engine of a car. By teaching him this exercise, you are telling him that you can shut his power down any time you choose to.
* Yield and Bend at the Walk
- This exercise will help you to push your horse’s hips up underneath himself while bending in a circle, which sets the foundation of collection.
* Yield and Bend at the Trot and Canter
- This exercise will build off the previous one, but you’ll also be working on the horse’s gear box by asking for downward transitions from the trot and canter. Any time a horse’s feet speed up, there will be more resistance, so it’s important to be able to practice the exercise at all three gaits.
* Yield the Hindquarters and Back Up
- This exercise is the foundation to teaching your horse how to back up. Yielding the hindquarters first gets the horse’s feet moving, which makes it easier to redirect his energy backwards.

* Sidepassing at the Standstill on the Fence
- This exercise will help you gain better control of your horse’s shoulders, ribcage and hindqua
