About Movie.Produced to the highest standard of scientific film making, INSECTIA is an educational series built on the startling analogies between human and insect behaviour. As of now, our survival on this planet depends on our ability to forge new alliances with nature, and INSECTIA sheds some critical light on the subject.
They have existed for over 225 million years, and long after we are gone, they will continue to create new forms that will occupy every conceivable ecological niche. Their ability to adapt is one of evolution's success stories. Their diversity is phenomenal; their biomass, colossal. By themselves, they represent 80% of all living species; their weight exceeds that of all mammals put together. They are the inventors of paper, sonar, air conditioning, chemical warfare, pharmacology, and specialized workers.
01. Living Art.
With their bright colours, their fantastic textures and their wonderful ornamental details, insects certainly represent the most remarkable artistic phenomenon on Earth. Insects are not only interesting for their scientific or economic value. More and more people are now aware of another value: their beauty.
Entomologist Georges Brossard takes us right into the tropical forest to visit the Sequoias tribe, where craftsmen make sumptuous necklaces with shining leaf chafer shells. He then takes us on a tour of his friend George Foster's workshop, whose sculptures of giant insects amaze the world.
Along with beetles and sculpture, there are also butterflies and pictorial art. Their wings are works of art which could be framed. They are a combination of fauvism, expressionism and abstract art.
We do not know why and for whom insects make themselves beautiful? Let's not try to understand. Let ourselves simply be seduced by all these astonishing demonstrations of living art.
02. Silent Partners.
Insects are present in all of our planet's ecological niches. As if that was not enough, they can now be found in various branches of industries that used to be typically human. Medicine, robotics, even police investigations are all fields where we are finding more and more insects.
Entomologist Georges Brossard takes us to Chinese drugstore in Asia and reveals to us the surprising medicinal properties of many insects. Insects are not only found in traditional Chinese medicine, they are also used today in our modern hospitals to save injured people from amputation and to relieve arthritic pain.
Insects are even found in fields as specialised as robotics. To create futuristic robots and machines, more and more engineers are inspired by the wonderful mechanics of insects, improved by millions of years of research and development.
Even the police call on insects to solve certain enigmas. Georges Brossard and his colleague, Dr. Baharudin, lead the investigation. Since the fly is often the first to arrive at the scene of a crime, this insect might reveal decisive facts to a legal entomologist. From now on, we should replace the famous 'Elementary, my dear Watson' by 'Elateridae, my dear Watson'!
03. Myths & Legends.
Humans have always been very good at creating myths and legends. Since the dawn of time, man has shared his garden, his house, even his bed, with insects. Not surprisingly, they have also invaded his imagination!
Entomologist Georges Brossard refers to the creation myths of several nations to tell us the story of the world's creation, revised and updated by insects. According to these legends, the Earth was created by a spider, the ocean by a water strider and the stars by a beetle. As for butterflies, they gave humans the most marvellous gift of all: colours.
Because of their strange shape and behaviour, some insects, such as the mysterious praying-mantis, are automatically credited with magical powers. Other insects, whose stings are extremely painful, are used in cruel initiation rites... which Georges Brossard will experiment himself!
It is not always easy to scientifically explain the strange behaviour and the incomprehensible strength of insects. It is much easier, even for the modern man, to evoke their magical powers.
04. Invertebrate Inventors.
The wheel, agriculture and breeding: mankind's three greatest inventions? Wrong! The humble dung beetle invented the wheel while the ant invented agriculture and breeding.
Insects are our planet's oldest inhabitants. It's not surprising that they have invented almost everything in fields as varied as communications, transportation, engineering and architecture. Oars, wings, jet engines, concrete, paper and cold light are all patents which rightfully belong to insects.
How can an insect with a brain the size of a grain of sand become a brilliant inventor? Entomologist Georges Brossard answers this question through a series of surprising experiments which prove that not only can insects learn, but they also have a kind of innate knowledge.
Insects definitely have a flair for invention...all they need now is a few good lawyers!
05. New World Order.
What is the best system for managing a society? Communism? That just collapsed. Good old capitalism? That system is also showing signs of exhaustion. Don't look further. Three systems beat, in terms of longevity and efficiency, everything ever created by man: the multinational corporations established over 200 million years ago by termites, bees and ants.
By digging up termites and ants hills, and by carrying out all kinds of field experiments, entomologist Georges Brossard finally reveals the industrial secrets that have contributed to the tremendous success of social insects.
We discover astoundingly efficient organizations based on the construction of an ideal workplace, specialization of the work force and strict staff management. The result: extraordinary productivity.
Here is some sound advice: stop investing in Japanese corporations. Instead, put your money on Ants & Associates, Bees International or Termites Inc.
06. Wicked Butterflies.
Among all insects, butterflies are definitely the ones with the best reputation. Everyone loves these gracious flying stained-glass pieces of artwork that have inspired poets and charmed nature lovers. However, butterflies are actually violent animals, drug addicts and sexual maniacs.
They are real Dr.Jekylls and Mr.Hydes. These harmless pollen-gatherers were, at birth, voracious caterpillars that would make even a big white shark jealous. Entomologist Georges Brossard knows something about it: we will see him work like a maniac to feed caterpillars on a butterfly farm.
We usually think butterflies are soft and fragile. On the contrary, like most insects, they are remarkably robust. Monarchs, for instance, can make an incredible migration of thousands of kilometres. Butterflies also defend their territory against other insects and fight between themselves. They only have one idea in mind: sex. A butterfly is, in fact, only a copulating flying machine.
Some butterflies are definitely drunkards, filling up on the alcohol from fermented fruits. Others appreciate exotic meals such as urine, excrements and rotten fish.
07. The Mating Game.
Sex is said to be as old as the world. So are insects. Of all the animal species, they are t
